Network Systems Engineer

The Network Services department of Boston CollegeInformation Technology Services is responsible for all of the University'snetwork infrastructure (ex: switches/routers/ VPNs/wirelessdevices/firewalls/datacenters) and interconnections between theUniversity's campuses, disaster recovery sites, internet, Internet2 and cloudapplications and services. This network is essential for all of theacademic, research and business functions of the University.

The Network Systems Engineer analyzes networking needs,recommends solutions, designs, implements, maintains and supports theUniversity's local area network (LAN) and the wide area network (WAN). Thisindividual must be able to work independently, juggle multiple demands andprioritize work in a dynamic environment.

The staff works closely with the systems and ITS securityteams. The Network Systems Engineer provides technical expertise in theengineering, installation, monitoring and maintenance of the network in supportof the University's business needs and academic mission.

The candidate should possess the following demonstratedfunctional and technical competencies:

  • Self-motivation and the ability to work within a strong team environment is essential.

  • Work with other engineers and multiple vendors to complete complex projects.
  • Analytical skills - diagnosing problems and completing root cause analysis.
  • Ability to understand, analyze and resolve problems quickly.

  • Ability to learn and support new technologies and train others.
  • Ticket management: this includes documentation of work performed, follow up with customers and information gathering process to complete the requests.
  • Work collaboratively as a member of the Network Services engineering team and in cross-functional teams within IT and across the University.

  • Flexibility, willingness & ability to quickly learn and support new technologies as needed.
  • Off-hours support may be required to meet project/unit deadlines and time-frames and for troubleshooting/problem resolution.

Title and salary commensurate with relevant experiencebased on the following titles and hiring ranges:

  • Senior level (5 + years exp.) Salary Range: $104,500 to $130,600
  • Mid-level (3-5 years exp.) Salary Range: $90,100 to $112,600
  • Associate level (1-3 years exp.) Salary Range: $74,050 to $92,500

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or related field a plus.
  • Minimum of 6 years relevant experience preferred.
  • Verbal and written communication skills: Must be able to articulate technical issues & solutions and produce clear, concise written documentation.
  • Cisco certifications are a plus.
  • Experience working in a Higher Education and/or a large campus/corporate network a plus.
