Job Description

In this role, you will assist in overseeing kitchen operations, ensuring students are served nutritious and appealing meals in a clean, welcoming atmosphere. You'll help organize, train staff, and manage food production and service activities, all while supporting the School Nutrition Manager with record-keeping and reporting. You'll play a key role in developing kitchen staff and fostering positive community relations within the school and beyond. This position may involve cooking, cashiering, serving, or assisting in various kitchen tasks. You will also ensure compliance and maintain accurate records in line with local, state, federal, and USDA regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Prepare, cook, and serve meals using standardized recipes, ensuring they meet dietary requirements and special instructions.
Utilize batch cooking methods, replenishing food as needed to ensure fresh, well-prepared meals are always available during serving times.
Ensure all safety and sanitation practices are followed to meet health department and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) standards.
Review daily menus and production records to ensure sufficient portions are prepared, and suggest menu adjustments as needed.
Assist with inventory management, including ordering, receiving, and proper storage of food items, and monitor the quality of received goods.
Serve meals, answer questions related to the menu, and provide excellent customer service.
Assist in maintaining financial records for meal transactions and ensure the accuracy of Free and Reduced meal reports.
Participate in kitchen tasks such as food prep, cleaning, sanitation, and temperature monitoring of food and equipment.
Assist with the accurate recording of meals, including leftover tracking, inventory, and production reports.
Step in as the Person in Charge (PIC) when the manager is unavailable, ensuring the kitchen's safe and effective operation.
Establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community.
Additional Duties

May act as a cook, cashier, server, or helper as needed.
Maintain cleanliness and organization of the kitchen, including proper sanitization of equipment and dining areas.
Provide training and support to kitchen staff, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
Ensure compliance with food safety standards, including maintaining proper hygiene and attire.
Attend relevant training workshops and classes to stay current on food service standards and requirements.
Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Experience: 1-2 years of experience in institutional food preparation, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the necessary skills and knowledge.
Skills and Abilities

Ability to communicate in a positive and professional manner with students, staff, and coworkers.
Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
Knowledge of food preparation, safety, and sanitation standards.
Ability to use a computer for food ordering, inventory management, and record-keeping.
Physical ability to perform kitchen tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds and standing for long periods.
Physical Requirements

Must be able to operate commercial kitchen equipment and handle physical tasks such as bending, lifting, and standing for extended periods.
Ability to safely lift and transport food items and kitchen supplies.
